And what instrument?

For me, I started playing guitar when I heard and wanted to learn "Heaven Beside You" by Alice in Chains, about 7 years ago

There was so single band or artist that inspired me to start playing the guitar. Joe Satriani, David Gilmour, Jimi Hendrix, and Tony Iommi were my main influences when I picked up my first guitar.

I began taking voice lessons when I first really listening to Led Zeppelin. More than any other vocalist, I think Robert Plant uses his voice as an instrument and as a compliment to the music his band plays. I wanted to train my voice to compliment my abilities as a guitarist, but I wanted to still sound feminine and not resort to screaming. To that end, I was further influenced by Tarja Turunen, Nina Gordon, Christine McVie, and Ann and Nancy Wilson.

I began playing bass guitar more as an extension of playing guitar than anything else. There is a list of bass guitarists that have influenced and inspired me, but I’ll mention Chris Squire, Roger Waters, Geezer Butler, Geddy Lee, Jaco Pastorius, and John Myung as my favorites.

I can play two songs on the drums, but I’m not a drummer. They’re easy, and that’s why I learned them.

I started taking piano lessons just for the sake of learning an instrument, but Regina Spektor inspired me to start composing my own songs.

Joy Division inspired me to get a glockenspiel. I can’t really explain how that happened.

Pete Ham of Badfinger. Of course, when my brother started taking guitar lessons, that also inspired me to learn to play guitar. Also, most recently, country guitarist Brad Paisley has inspired me to start learning how to play some real country guitar, as well as jazz guitar.

However, before I ever attempted to play guitar, I started on the violin taking free lessons from school. Of course, I ended up teaching myself more than the teacher did, so I ended up quitting. If I had taken real lessons for violin, I might have, one day, been a good violinist. Now, I play guitar, keyboard and a bit of mandolin though–mainly guitar.

Actually it was my mom who was inspired for me to learn an instrument-right when Elton John was big back in the day. When I was about 4 or 5 my biggest influence was Jim Croce.
Since then I have always had a keen interest in singer/songwriters. But honestly I get inspired by good music it really doesn’t matter what style or genre as long as it’s good. Influences can come from anywhere at any time. That’s what real music does.
