If you think your child is in need of help with 6th grade math, then there are a number of ways in which you can help.

Firstly, make sure your child has understood the lesson that has been taught in class. Go through with him, sit down and go through the work together. Good math textbooks have worked examples in them. Once you have read the theory, then you will be able to go through the worked examples with your child. At this point you might be able to see where the problem lies and which particular point he did not understand.

If you can catch this early, then you can go through and explain to him or her the missing gaps in their knowledge. Luckily, this is still 6th grade math so it is nowhere near as complicated as 8th grade math problems. Which means you should be able to follow along with it, even though math might not be your thing.

Once your child feels sufficiently confident that he has understood the theory element, the next step is to get lots of practice. Math, after all, can be greatly improved by doing lots of examples. In fact, doing lots of math problem worksheets will enhance the information that has been learned by practical use.

So, either ask for lots of extra worksheets from school or download the relevant practice sheets from a good math website on the internet.

Get your child to do a sheet a day. It will give him lots of practice and build his confidence.

And really, a lot of doing well with math is to do with getting your child’s confidence up. If you can do that, you’re halfway there to being able to work through 6th grade math problems.

If you are looking for a way in which you can help your child study trig, then start with their school books.

Look through the topics that have been taught in the math class whether it be sine, cosine or tangent, trig functions or ratios in triangles, and go through the class notes first. Then go through the worked examples. Most good trigonometry text books will have a section on theory followed by worked out examples and then some more questions for the student to do on his own.

Going through worked out examples is a great way to check that your child has followed the topic and can then apply what was taught. It forces an application of the theory work and is a great way of cementing that knowledge.

So, go through the examples in the text book and see if your child is able to do the extra questions at the end of the book.

If your child is still struggling with these questions but is able to see how the worked examples were solved, then you might need to download some easy questions from the internet.

The key to becoming good at maths has a lot to do with confidence. If your child has the confidence, then even if he finds certain questions difficult, he won’t be daunted by them and will persevere until he completes them. If your child lacks confidence, then no matter how easy a question might be, the lack of confidence will make him approach problems in a timid manner and this can hinder his progress.

Where possible, therefore, the best way to help your child in trigonometry or geometry or in any of the maths disciplines, is to ensure they understand the basics and then have the confidence to believe that they can work through the problems. Start with easy level problems and gradually move on to more difficult ones.

A lot of high school students find that 8th grade math problems such as solving algebraic equations, learning how to find the volume of 3D shapes, calculating the length of a side of a triangle and getting to grips with the concepts of statistics and probability can be quite overwhelming at first. This can put many students off the subject of math completely. This is something that parents dread.

Even the concept of using “words” and “alphabetic characters” to solve mathematical problems can be a source of confusion because all of a sudden, the emphasis in math is not on “numbers” per se but more on finding the values of “unknowns”.

For many parents who are confronted with their children’s 8th grade math homework worksheets, they too can be taken aback and many would not know how to begin to help their children solve these problems, especially if many of these parents were not good at math themselves.

After all, this is not junior high school any more. 6th grade math is so comparatively simple compared to what students start to learn at 7th and 8th grade.

So,what can you do to help your child if he is struggling with his 8th grade math homework?

The first thing is to see if you are able to assist in any way. Getting involved and showing some interest in your child’s homework is important, especially if your child is finding the subject difficult as it is. Parental support and interest is vital. Even if all you can offer your child is a word of comfort, this is better than ignoring the problem altogether.

The next thing to do would be to talk to the math teacher at school and see if you can get any extra workbooks or math worksheets to go through. Teachers want their students to do well and many will go the extra mile to make help their students in any way that they can.

But what if you have spoken to the teacher, have extra math homework and worksheets for your child but they are still finding it difficult to understand the topics?

The next step in this case would be to find another source of math help.

This could be in the form of finding a math tutor who comes either from recommendation, for instance other parents have hired this tutor and found this has greatly helped their children. If you are going to hire a personal math tutor to give your child the one-to-one learning that he might need, then going with recommendations is the best way. Otherwise, you might end up interviewing and looking at many potential math tutors before you find one that you feel would be a good fit for your child. You also have to ensure that you find a tutor nearby otherwise your petrol costs driving there and back each week will mount up, on top of the fees you pay (sometimes as much as $30 per hour) for the tutor.

Increasingly, many parents are turning to online math courses in a bid to find math help for their child at a cost that is affordable. There are many good online learning courses available and they offer math teaching online (as well as science and other subjects) via tutorials that are recorded and which your child can access at any time and watch over and over again.

Many of these programs also have the tutors going through examples and showing the student how they have worked out the solution to a given problem.

If you are unsure of whether an online math help program is going to give your child the math help he needs, sign up for a trial version if possible and give this a try.

Whatever you do, finding math help for your child especially if he or she is struggling with their 8th grade math lessons, is the right thing to do instead of ignoring the situation and hoping it will resolve itself – it won’t and the only thing that will happen is that your child’s maths grades will start to go down.

Many students seem to find trigonometry as being one of the tougher subjects to study at school and at college.

Also known as “trig”, this is a math discipline that is taught in secondary schools as a course on its own or sometimes as part of a pre-calculus course.

Trigonometry is a branch of math that involves triangles specifically, the relationship between the sides of a triangle and the angle between them. Terms such as “sine, cosine and tangent” are key in trigonometry.

As with many subjects in math, the more practice a student has of working through and solving particular types of trigonometric problems, the easier he will find it. With math, practice really can make you better at a subject.

For many students, algebra and geometry will often precede the study of trigonometry. This is because a student needs to be familiar with these two topics first, since they lay down the foundation on which trigonometry is based. Students will find that more often than not, they will be trying to work out the lengths of the sides or the angles of a triangle based on certain factors. The sine, cosine and tangent functions, known as sin x, cos x and tan x can be worked out by using a calculator. Here again, using a calculator to work out the sin, cos and tan values is not as easy as using a calculator to work out addition and subtraction.

Students find that they need to upgrade to a more scientific calculator once they start doing calculus and trigonometry problems at school as the basic mathematical operators will no longer suffice.

Given all of the above, it is no surprise that many students find trigonometry difficult to begin with. There are so many new terms, new unknowns, new keys on the calculator to deal with. However, with practice and persistence and a good basic understanding of the fundamental principles of trigonometry, students can work through their initial trigonometry problems and find this to be a subject that they can master in the end.

Students learning algebra in their math lessons can be forgive for looking very confused after the first few lessons. Algebra can seen difficult at first. Having been used to dealing with numbers during math lessons, all of a sudden now students are now dealing with unknown variables such as x, y and z.

In reality, we use algebra all the time in the real world and the studies of physics, biology and chemistry are based on many algebraic formulae and equations.

So, the sooner the student realises that algebra is a way of solving complex problems, the better he will be to deal with them and find answers.

Students new to the concept of algebra need to be familiar with the vocabulary first.

You need to know what something means before you can use it to help you solve a problem. So, it is important for students to know about “like terms” such as: x + 3x -6x where all the unknowns are of the same “type” as well as knowing about algebraic equations where there is more than one unknown. For example, 3x+5y=10 which contains two “unknowns” which are “x” and “y”.

Just understanding this basic concept is a great start to understanding algebra.

Does the mention of the words trigonometry or geometry make your children’s eyes glaze over? Come to mention it, does it make your eyes glaze over too?
Angles, radians, sine, cosine and tangent can sound like scary words that have no meaning, if your child is not confident with trigonometry.

Similarly, geometry, which also involves common shapes such as circles, lines and triangle can be equally confusing. Trying to determine the volume of a cone of a certain radius and height might make your child want to run a mile.

It need not be that way though. Sure, math gets harder as your children move through school. However, provided they are confident and fully understand what they have been taught at each step of the way, they should be able to deal with new concepts and mathematical ideals, such as algebra, trigonometry and geometry, by the time they get to this part of the school curriculum.

Typically schools can help to a point. If you find that your child is starting to dread the thought of another math lesson at school, or shuns his homework because he doesn’t want to face it because he doesn’t understand it and hence can’t do it, you can always speak to his school teacher. The problem is that school teachers can only help to a point.

They cannot and will not ignore the rest of the class to explain something to your child if it is taking too long.

This is when parental help can come in handy.

However, increasingly, with many parents working longer hours and not having the time available to spend with children, parents are looking for math tutors to help their children through the harder aspects of math such as trigonometry or geometry.

Hiring a math tutor to give your child math help is fine if you can afford it.

At a cost ranging from $20 – $40 per hour for a personal math tutor, many parents simply cannot afford one-to-one personal tuition, this is way out of many people’s price range.

A cost-effective alternative is to consider using an online learning environment.

Usually, this type of study tends to be computer based and involves a monhthly subscription to a programme which gives you access to the relevant maths modules. Your child logon and watch a video where a college professor, or other expert, will explain math principles in detail.

You will also find many programs have examples and also give students some questions to answer based on what they have just learned.

Why not try Educator.com? Click Here To Find Out More

For as little as $20 a month (if you purchase the 12 month porgram), or $35 a month if you are opting to pay for each month as you go, it still works out a lot more cost-effective than getting a personal tutor.

Not only that but with an online learning environment your child can watch the tuition videos over and over again as many times as he or she wants. Compare this to having a personal tutor, where, once they have done their hours worth of tuition, your child won’t see them until the following week.

Why not give Educator.com a trial and see if you can give your child confidence in trigonometry

Many parents are finding that they can raise their child’s grades by having a monthly subscirption to Educator.com.

You’ll find that the teaching staff at Educator.com consists of college professors and tutors who are subject matter experts in their field of learning.

As an example, here is the table of contents taken from the Trigonometric Functions module which covers ANGLES. The module is around 39 minutes long and the contents include:

Let’s face it, in this day and age there is no getting away from algebra, whether you are in middle school or high school or college, you will be studying algebra.

The reason why many students instinctively take a dislike to algebra is because all the letters and funny symbols look so alien, at first glance. We don’t see nice and easy numbers that we can make sense of. So, when confronted by what looks to be complicated expressions, not to mention the often abstract concepts that go along with it, its no wonder that algebra is a no-no with many students.

Its one thing not liking algebra at school but this can become a problem if your child then starts to struggle with homework and has poor grades in the subject. Formulae and algebraic functions can be overwhelming for the child who is confronted with a book full of algebra problems to do at home.

If mom or dad or older siblings are unable to help, your child is truly stuck. The only recourse you have is to getting a personal math tutor to help with algebra problems, or to go online and see if you can find a suitable online learning environment for math.

Luckily, there is such an environment at www.educator.com

Learn Algebra Online with Educator.com

Here you will find experts who are able to teach the basics and more advanced levels of Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 to students who are struggling to understand these very topics.

For $20 a month, your child gets access to online modules and lessons where the tutor will explain math concepts in detail and go through examples so that your child can understand these concepts at a pace which suits him. If he didn’t understand fully the first time, he can watch the tutorial over and over again as many times as he wants. Incidentally, not only do you get access to math modules but also the other science modules and math modules as well.

Each of the core subjects is broken down into many sub-parts so your child can be very selective and pick the subjects that they are struggling with.

At the moment of writing:

Alegbra 1 module has 65 lectures
Algebra 2 module has 72 lectures

Learn CALCULUS Online with Educator.com

When you select a module, you are given a table of contents that shows you the topics covered within each module, how long each module is and at what time interval in that module the different subjects start. This is excellent as it save time because instead of watching a module from start to finish, you can directly access the core concept you are interesed in and watch that.

As an example, let’s take one of the modules in Algebra 1.
Let’s take Factoring Monomials:

Factoring Monomials 27:25
Intro 0:00
Prime and Composite Numbers 1:01
Prime Number 1:23
Composite Number 3:03
Factored Forms 4:07
Prime Factored Form 4:19
Factored Form 5:40
Greatest Common Factor (GCF) 7:41
Example 8:00
GCF of Monomials 10:07
Example 10:18
Lecture Example 1 12:52
Lecture Example 2 17:08
Additional Example 3 4:01
Additional Example 4 4:29

As you can see, the Factoring Monomials lesson is about 27 minutes long.

It covers concepts such as prime and composite numbers as well as greatest common factor and factored forms.
From a glance, it is easy to tell where in the lesson each of the sub-topics begins.

Also note that each module ends with a lecture example as well as an additional example for the student to go over in order to complement their learning.

If you are still unsure whether a personal math tutor is the way to go or whether to opt for an online learning environment to help your child with their algebra problems, why not try out Educator.com? For $35 you can get a month’s trial, or sign up for 12 months and pay only $20 a month. It still works out cheaper than getting a math tutor.

8th grade math can get quite complicated for older children and if your child is not at ease with integers, fractions, decimals or percentages as well as dealing with numbers with exponents or numbers expresssed in scientific notation, then they might being to struggle during their lessons.

As a parent, the last thing you want to see is your child struggling to keep up with their 8th grade math lessons.

If you can help, then all well and good. There is nothing like having a parent who is good at math and who will take the time to explain core concepts to a a child until they understand a concept fully.

Sometimes, in a classroom setting, teachers will not be able to spend such devoted one-to-one time with a student because it will hold up the rest of the class.

What If Parents Aren’t Able To Help With Math Problems?

Its at this point that many parents will start to look around for a personal tutor to come to their home to spend the quality one-to-one teaching time that could possible benefit their child.
In some cases, you’ll need to take your child to the tutor’s house which means you’ll have to spend time and money (petrol) to drive them there and back.

Don’t forget that paying for personal math tuition can be expensive and range from $20 to $40 an hour, depending on the tutor’s level or expertise and taking into consideration factors such as driving time and fuel compensation. In these time of sky-high fuel prices you can expect tutors will want some sort of compensation for this if they are driving to your house.

Having a personal math tutor and paying anywhere from $20-$40 an hour can work out to be quite an expensive commitment for parents over the course of a few months to a year, as you can imagine. And if you are having to pay for a tutor for more than one child, the costs can get out of hand quite quickly.

Math tutors can be an excellent help for your child and if they can help your child raise their grades, then obviously it will have been well worth it.

What If You Cannot Afford A Personal Math Tutor For Your Child?

An alternative would be to seek out an online learning environment that can teach your child the level of math that they need and have properly qualified and excellent tutors who know their subject matter well. More than that, these college tutors need to be able to explain their subjects very well in an online learning environment which is not often very interactive.

An affordable and very useful online learning environment that many parents are absolutely loving at the moment is Educator.com

For as little as $20 a month, your child can get access 24/7 to ALL the modules on the Educator.com website, even if all you need are the math modules.
Learn CALCULUS Online with Educator.com

If you want to pay for each month or only need a 1 month subcription, the cost for this is $35 a month. Compare this to a personal math tutor who charges $20-$40 AN HOUR.

If you sign up for a 12 month plan, this gives you a huge saving of 43% and the cost to you is $20 a month. This is the most cost effective way of subscribing for Educator’s online learning environment.

Learn Algebra Online with Educator.com

So, if your child is struggling with 8th grade math problems or cannot make head or tail of 8th grade algebra and you cannot help him, why not sign up to Educator.com and see if you can give your child more confidence in math?

At $20 a month, its worth a try.

Educator.com: Affordable Tutoring for Your Child

6th grade math is what your child will be studying when he or she goes to middle school. Many kids are just turning 11 or about to turn 12 when they are in 6th grade.

Many children and their parents can often find 6th grade math a bit of a shock, if they have not had a good foundation in math in their earlier school years.

When children start to struggle with basic math concepts, it makes it difficult to move onto the next level, because each subsequent level builds on the one before. Therefore, the last thing your child needs is to fall behind.

Many parents do spend a lot of time with their children revisiting topics and helping with homework but this isn’t always possible. Many are working parents and by the time they get back from work, often at a late hour, the last thing they really want to do is sit down and explain 6th grade math.

This is where an online learning environment, such as that provided by Educator.com, comes is very handy.

Instant Homework Help from Educator.com

For $20 a month, you can get unlimited access and watch online math tutors deliver clear and easy to understand mathematics. From fractions, ratios, graphing, geometry to probability, expressions and equations, you’ll find the 6th grade math help that you need at Educator.com

This means that by the end of 5th grade, many students should be relatively used to doing numerical addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. As well as having been introduced to percentages, decimals and fractions, they will have been introduced to the concepts of basic graphs and chart, using these to plot data in a variety of cases.

It is also around 6th grade that children will be taught basic algebra which is an important core fundamental topic. After all, everything to do with algebraic equations and calculus builds on from here. Therefore it is important to ensure that the topic is introduced in a fairly simple fashion and a lot of examples are looked at so as to give the student a feel of familiarity.

Along with statistics and probability, your 6th graders will also start to explore geometry with all the angles, quadrilaterals and various other 2-3 and 3-d shapes. They will be expected to find the area and volume occupied by these shapes as well.

Learn CALCULUS Online with Educator.com

The main thing to remember is that 6th grade math is different from what your children have been used to whilst studying math to 5th grade but whilst the concepts are difficult, they should be based on what the children have so far learned. Whether we like to accept it or not, our world is full of math. And, with our current global financial crisis hanging over us, we should be encouraging our children to enjoy numbers because the beauty about math is that it actually does come in useful in the real world. From determining whether you have been short-changed at a restaurant, to planning and budgeting household expenses, it all comes from math.

If you feel that your child is struggling to get to grips with the basics of 6th grade math, why not consider Educator.com, which is an online learning system that can help your child with any math problems they might have.

Why not give Educator.com a trial and see if this is something you might want to take up? It is based on a subscription service, which means you pay every month for the service and get access 24/7.

Instant Homework Help from Educator.com

What is Educator.com?

Educator.com is an online learning center biased more towards Match and Science.

It is one of the most effective and affordable online tutoring services available for high-school and college students.
At Educator.com the people leading the courses are college professors or professional tutors who know their subject matter extremely well and are able to pass on this knowledge effectively.

Being an online learning experience, you have to buy a subscription which will give you unlimited access to all the courses that are on offer.

This means, whenever your child is stuck on any topic at school, they can log on to the Educator.com system and pinpoint the course that they need more explanation on.

It’s like having a personal tutor but at a fraction of the cost.

Raise your Child’s Grades with Educator.com

As mentioned earlier, the topics on offer are geared more toward Math and Science topics and as of the moment of this writing, the courses offered by Educator.com are:

Mathematics – 34 courses

Chemistry – 22 courses

Physics – 30 courses

Biology – 12 courses

Computer Sciences – 11 courses

Get Access to Every Online Learning Course Available at Educator.com

When you join the Educator.com online learning environment, you will have accesss to every course they offer.
Even if you were only interested in Trigonometry.

You can logon to the Educator.com website and access a FREE lesson in order to get a taster of what the teaching style and delivery of the courses presented are like.

Instant Homework Help from Educator.com

From what we have seen, the videos and course content are high-quality and subject matter is explained clearly in a manner that is engaging. Often, the problem with watching an online presentation is that the viewer is more likely to lose interest or start to think about other things, because the environment is not interactive as it would be in a classroom.

That said, with the presenters clear manner and effective delivery, we feel that Educator.com has employed first-class individuals to present their courses.

Online Tutoring: Better Value for Money Than A Regular Home Tuition Expert

The biggest difference with going the online tutoring route as opposed to having a tutor come to your home is that:

1) You determine the times you want to logon and learn.

With a tutor you will have preset times every week and this also incurs the cost of petrol and the parents time – to drive children to and from tutors.

2) With a tutor, your child has only 1 hour (or a fixed time limit) with which they can “learn one to one”. Once the tutor has left, there might be concepts that your child might need reinforcement on. But if your tutor has left, you have to wait until the following week. With Educator’s online learning environment, you can logon and access the system as many times as you want, 1 or 30 times. You can re-watch modules over and over until a concept is so soundly ingrained and you understand it perfectly.
This is priceless.

Not to mention that, as a parent, you don’t have to spend your time driving your children to and from tutor homes and you save money on petrol too.

Watching Lessons Online
The modules for each topic are broken down nicely.

At the top of the screen you will see the topic, the lecture, the duration of the lecture and a list of the topics that are being covered as well as the times during that lecture that a particular topic is discussed.

So, if you are only interested in learning about “Geometric Isomers” you will see that this is at 8:14 minutes into the lecture and you can fast forward to that point in time.

This is absolutely gold. It helps you to focus on learning exactly WHAT you want, WHEN you want.

How Much Does Online Tutoring Cost?

$35 for 1 month plan

$25 per month for a 6 month plan

$20 per month for a 12 month plan

This is a subscription based service, so if you go with the BASIC ONE MONTH PLAN it will cost you $35.

If you opt for the most successful plan which is to pay for 12 months, you save 43% and end up paying $20 per month.

“I’m so glad my son can get the help he needs without me having to get an expensive private tutor. Why pay $45/hour when you can have unlimited help for a whole month?” – Margaret O.

“As a fellow educator, I really do love this website and its mission. The current educational system is not perfect and some students get left behind. Now, they can get the help they need whenever they need it. What easier way to equalize education across this nation than to provide everyone with the best teachers at a very affordable price? I’m recommending the site to my students, parents, and fellow colleagues.” - Nancy M.
