If you think your child is in need of help with 6th grade math, then there are a number of ways in which you  can help.

Firstly, make sure your child has understood the lesson  that has been taught in class.  Go through with him, sit  down and go through the work together.  Good math  textbooks have worked examples in them.  Once you have  read the theory, then you will be able to go through the  worked examples with your child.  At this point you  might be able to see where the problem lies and which  particular point he did not understand.

If you can catch this early, then you can go through and  explain to him or her the missing gaps in their  knowledge.  Luckily, this is still 6th grade math so it  is nowhere near as complicated as 8th grade math problems. Which  means you should be able to follow along with it, even  though math might not be your thing.

Once your child feels sufficiently confident that he has  understood the theory element, the next step is to get  lots of practice.  Math, after all, can be greatly  improved by doing lots of examples. In fact, doing lots  of math problem worksheets will enhance the information  that has been learned by practical use.

So, either ask for lots of extra worksheets from school  or download the relevant practice sheets from a good  math website on the internet.

Get your child to do a sheet a day.  It will give him  lots of practice and build his confidence.

And really, a lot of doing well with math is to do with  getting your child’s confidence up.  If you can do that,  you’re halfway there to being able to work through 6th  grade math problems.
